55th Session of the Human Rights Council

End of session statement – 5 April 2024

Thank you, Mr. President.

As a proud member of the core group, Australia welcomes yesterday's historic adoption of the resolution on combatting discrimination, violence and harmful practices against intersex persons.

This landmark resolution is the first to recognise that intersex persons exist in all societies, and may face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination in all areas of life.

This resolution is a major step forward in protecting intersex people from stigma, discrimination, and violence.

None of this progress would have happened, however, without the tireless work of civil society.

We have listened to the voices of intersex people and their representative organisations who called for recognition in this Council. And Australia is pleased to amplify these voices.

Australia is looking forward to contributing to the activities mandated by this resolution, and hopes all states engage.

We all have a lot to learn on how to address discrimination, violence and harmful practices against persons who are born with innate variations in sex characteristics.
