United Nations
Statement by: Shilpa Pullela, Counsellor Sustainable Development and Human Rights, Australian Mission to the United Nations
As delivered
Australia commends the crucial work of the UN to continue to highlight the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. At a time marked by crisis and conflict, we must not forget the people of Myanmar, and the sustained and deplorable human rights abuses inflicted on them must end.
Australia will continue to work with the international community to focus attention on the crisis in Myanmar, and to sustain pressure on the military regime.
We have consistently condemned the actions of the military regime – including its latest attack on civilians, in Kachin State on 9 October, which killed and injured civilians already in humanitarian distress.
We urge the military to end its violence against civilians, engage in dialogue, release those unjustly detained, and allow safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance.
We continue to strongly support ASEAN's leadership as a key element in responding to the crisis in Myanmar. We urge the military regime to engage constructively with ASEAN and to fully implement its commitments under the Five-Point Consensus.
Australia continues to call on Member States to cease the supply, sale and transfer of arms and related matériel to Myanmar. We strongly support calls for a global arms embargo.
Australia remains committed to supporting the people of Myanmar, who have shown determined resilience in the face of unspeakable atrocities. My question is for all briefers: we welcome your views on what else the international community should be doing to support the people of Myanmar.
