United Nations
Statement by Mr Matthew Kelson, Adviser, Australian Mission to the UN
As delivered
Thank you Mr Chair.
Australia would like to thank the Special Rapporteur for her report.
We recognise the long-lasting impact and consequences of conflicts – like Russia's invasion of Ukraine – for poverty and development, human and labour rights and dignity, decent work and sustainable enterprises.
Russia's invasion breaches core tenants of the ILO's mission to promote peace through social justice. We support the ILO's Resolution adopted in March 2022 to protect and ensure labour rights and a safe environment for all those fleeing Ukraine, in particular those in vulnerable situations.
Australia continues to call on Russia to end its illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine.
Mr. Chair,
The Australian Government is supporting an increased regional response to the drivers of human trafficking, including those exacerbated by conflict.
The ASEAN-Australia Counter Trafficking (ASEAN-ACT) program is a 10-year $80 million investment, running from 2018-2028. It continues Australia's long running partnership with ASEAN and ASEAN Member States to counter human trafficking in our region, while protecting the rights of victim-survivors.
Australia, through ASEAN-ACT, is supporting Thailand to establish a Counter Trafficking in Persons Centre of Excellence. This will be the first training facility in the ASEAN region with a dedicated focus on countering human trafficking and will enhance access to justice for victim-survivors of these inhumane crimes.
We would like to ask the Special Rapporteur the following: how will she take forward the report's recommendation that UN investigative mandates and fact-finding bodies consistently investigate trafficking in conflict settings and further ensure accountability and justice for victims and survivors?
I thank you very much.
