Australian statement at the Interactive Dialogue with the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights, 10 October 2023

Statement by: Yunei Kim, First Secretary, Australian Mission to the UN
As delivered

Thank you, High Commissioner.

Australia is appalled by the abhorrent attacks on Israel by Hamas. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

We unequivocally condemn these attacks, including the indiscriminate rocket fire, the cruel acts that led to a shocking loss of life, and the taking of hostages, including women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. These

are distressing and egregious acts that Hamas must bear the responsibility for.

Such deliberate targeting of civilians and the appalling bloodshed demands unequivocal international condemnation of Hamas.

Australia calls for Hamas to stop all attacks.

We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all those taken hostage.

Regional actors, who oppose Israel, should not take advantage of the situation. Israel has a right to defend itself and its civilians.

We call on all parties to protect civilian lives, uphold the UN Charter, international human rights law, international humanitarian law and the rules-based order.

Australia stands firmly with the Israeli and Palestinian people in their right to live in peace and security, without fear and with their human rights fully respected as enshrined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Australia's guiding principle is advancing the cause of peace and progress toward a just and enduring two-state solution in which Israel and a future Palestinian state co-exist within internationally recognised borders.

The cycle of violence between Israel and the Palestinian people must be broken.

Thank you.
