Universal Periodic Review of the Republic of Moldova Statement by Australia
Statement by Australia
28 January 2022
Thank you, [President/Vice President]
Australia continues to encourage The Republic of Moldova to strengthen support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community, the Roma population, and victims and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence; and to improve conditions in prisons and detention facilities.
Australia recommends that the Republic of Moldova:
- Guarantee the human rights of LGBTI persons, including by addressing the barriers to their full participation in daily life.
- Execute impartial and effective investigations of crimes related to torture and ill-treatment and improve conditions in prisons and detention facilities.
- Take steps to ensure Roma people are accorded equal rights, including protection from violence and discrimination, and access to government services.
- Review sexual and gender-based violence related legislation and policy to ensure availability and accessibility of legal aid for victims and survivors, and that perpetrators are held to account.
