45th session of the Universal Periodic Review
Universal Periodic Review Working Group – 45th Session
Universal Periodic Review of Saudi Arabia
22 January 2024
Statement by Australia
Thank you, President
Australia acknowledges the steps taken on women’s social and economic participation and encourages further progress.
Australia is concerned by the continued application of the death penalty, exploitation of migrant and foreign workers, and lack of transparency in judicial proceedings – including for those exercising freedom of expression.
Australia recommends Saudi Arabia:
- Implement ongoing legal reforms to improve judicial transparency and prevent indefinite detention.
- Uphold provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, including the obligation to not impose the death penalty for offences committed by persons under 18.
- Strengthen the rights of foreign workers and combat human trafficking and forced labour through removal of exit visa requirements for foreign workers.
