47th session of the Universal Periodic Review

Universal Periodic Review of Albania, Statement by Australia, 4 November 2024

UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review – 47th Session

Universal Periodic Review of Albania

4 November 2024

Statement by Australia

Thank you, Vice President.

Australia acknowledges Albania’s efforts to address concerns raised during its last review, including in relation to gender equality and the rights of ethnic minorities and LGBTQIA+ people.

Australia also acknowledges Albania’s progress on judicial vetting and legal reforms, although we remain concerned by alleged ongoing political corruption and bribery.

Australia recommends Albania:

  1. Strengthen specialised gender-based violence units in the courts, the Office of the Public Prosecutor and the police.
  2. Implement in full the National Action Plan for the Equality, Inclusion and Participation of Roma and Egyptians to reduce these communities’ out-of-school rates.
  3. Improve prison and detention system infrastructure to reduce overcrowding and ensure access by detainees to adequate health care.
