47th session of the Universal Periodic Review

Universal Periodic Review of Ethiopia, Statement by Australia, 12 November 2024

UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review – 47th Session

Universal Periodic Review of Ethiopia

12 November 2024

Statement by Australia

Thank you, Vice President.

Australia is deeply concerned by continued reports of serious human rights violations and abuses, particularly in ongoing conflicts in Amhara and Oromia regional states.

Australia notes ongoing investigations into the deaths of humanitarian workers in Tigray in 2021, and encourages the timely, credible and transparent release of its findings, as well as continuing efforts for the protection of humanitarian personnel.

Australia acknowledges Ethiopia’s efforts to progress truth, justice and accountability mechanisms, including through the new Transitional Justice Policy, but full and effective implementation will not be possible while conflict persists.

Australia recommends Ethiopia:

  1. Establish a formal moratorium on the death penalty as a step toward complete abolition.
  2. Take measures to address sexual and gender-based violence and abuse against women and girls, particularly in conflict and post-conflict areas.
  3. Protect and uphold civil and political rights, particularly freedoms of expression and assembly, including for human rights defenders.
