47th session of the Universal Periodic Review

Universal Periodic Review of Portugal, Statement by Australia, 6 November 2024

UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review – 47th Session

Universal Periodic Review of Portugal

6 November 2024

Statement by Australia

Thank you, Vice President.

Australia welcomes Portugal’s adoption of legislation and national action plans since its last review to combat domestic violence and prioritise the investigation of alleged crimes perpetrated by law enforcement officers.

Australia recommends Portugal:

  1. Provide adequate training on gender-based violence to authorities and magistrates and simplify access to free legal aid for victims.
  2. Prevent human trafficking and labour exploitation, including through increased inspections by authorities in regions with high irregular migrant worker arrivals.
  3. Implement plans to improve the quality of detention facilities, including through multi-annual investment in the justice sector.
