Statement by Australia

Thank you, Vice President.

Australia welcomes Qatar’s progress to legislate labour reforms since its last review, including for the abolition of the kafala system, enforcement of a minimum monthly wage and establishment of worker redress schemes.

Australia recommends Qatar:

1. Implement existing labour reforms, including on institutional strengthening, employee representation, women’s workforce participation and foreign domestic workers.
2. Implement anti-discrimination laws and policies to protect the rights of members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
3. Establish a formal moratorium on the death penalty and seek alternative outcomes for those already sentenced to capital punishment.
