Universal Periodic Review of Dominica, Statement by Australia, 7 November 2024

UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review – 47th Session

Universal Periodic Review of Dominica

7 November 2024

Statement by Australia

Thank you, Vice President.

Australia welcomes the progress made by Dominica since its last review, including the decision by Dominica’s High Court to decriminalise same-sex relations.

Australia recommends Dominica:

  1. Ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to formalise its de facto moratorium on the death penalty with a view to abolition.
  2. Establish a national human rights institution in compliance with the Paris Principles.
  3. Enact legislation to directly incorporate the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women into local law.
