Universal Periodic Review of Barbados
5 May 2023
Statement by Australia
Thank you, [President/Vice President]
Australia commends Barbados for its progress on human rights since its last UPR appearance. We particularly welcome the decision of the High Court of Barbados to declare laws that criminalise consensual same‑sex relations as unconstitutional.
Australia recommends Barbados:
- Implement legislative and public policy measures to protect the rights of persons with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and sex characteristics.
- Prioritise resources for agencies responsible for the prevention of – and response to – violence against women and children.
- Establish a formal moratorium on the death penalty, as a step toward complete abolition.
