Media Release
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reviewed its Travel
Advice for Cambodia issued on 31 January 1995. The Department advises that
as a result of the security situation in much of the country, Australian
visitors should still exercise prudent care in Phnom Penh and should still
avoid non-essential travel outside that city and its environs, except to
the popular tourist areas listed below.
Banditry is widespread in Cambodia. There is a high level of risk to the
safety of foreign nationals. Outside Phnom Penh all travel should normally
be undertaken by air.
Travel from Phnom Penh by air to visit the Angkor Wat complex temples at
Siem Reap is safe although visitors should check with the local authorities
before attempting to visit the temple of Bantey Srei outside the Angkor
Wat complex.
- Travel by boat or road to Siem Reap should not be undertaken.
- Travel to Kampong Som (Sihanoukville) by air is considered safe. Travel
by road and or rail should not be undertaken. - Travel by air to some other destinations may be possible but Australian
visitors are urged to consult the Embassy for specific security advice before
making arrangements.
The Department strongly urges Australians resident in Cambodia, as well
as visitors, who are required to travel outside Phnom Penh, to register
their intentions with the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh. Australian travellers
are also advised to seek information about current security issues from
the Embassy. The Embassy's address and telephone numbers are:
