Australia is proud to partner with the Government and people of RMI to support RMI’s priorities, including economic development, climate change action, gender equality and the enhancement of regional connectivity. Australia also supports Marshallese students to study at institutions in Australia and the region through Australia Awards scholarships.

Program highlights

  • Australia is providing $2.5 million over five years to help implement components of RMI’s National Adaptation Plan, strengthening water and food security and supporting climate advocacy.
  • Australia is contributing $3 million to the Addressing Climate Vulnerability in the Water Sector (ACWA) Plus+ in the Marshall Islands.  The objective of the multi-partner project is to improve the supply of water for drinking and hygiene to vulnerable people in the outer atolls and islands, specifically during prolonged droughts.
  • Australia’s Pacific Flights Program facilitated the re-establishment of regular commercial flights connecting RMI to Australia, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati and Nauru.
  • Through Pacific Women Lead, Australia is also working to address national gender equality priorities in RMI, including to strengthen civil society action for gender equality, reduce the incidence of gender-based violence, and expand support services including establishing a domestic violence counselling service. A key implementing partner is the non-government organisation WUTMI (Women United Together Marshall Islands).
