Bilateral relations

Australia and El Salvador formally established diplomatic relations in 1983. Australia's Ambassador in Mexico City holds non-resident accreditation to El Salvador. Australia has an Honorary Consul in San Salvador.

El Salvador has an Embassy in Canberra, a Consul-General in Melbourne and Honorary Consuls in Brisbane and Sydney.

Australia and El Salvador enjoy warm relations underpinned by people-to-people links. In response to the civil war in El Salvador, between 1983 and 1986 Australia accepted around 10,000 Salvadorans under the Special Humanitarian Program. Australia is now home to the third largest Salvadoran community living abroad.

Australia and El Salvador cooperate multilaterally in numerous forums, including the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Bank.

The Australian Embassy in Mexico manages a Direct Aid Program in El Salvador.
