Key engagement

Australia formally began diplomatic relations with Moldova in 1992.

Bilateral relations

Australia enjoys warm and friendly relations with Moldova, with both countries actively participating in a range of multilateral forums. Moldova is a member of a number of international organisations including the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Moldova is a member of NATO's Partnership for Peace and the EU's Eastern Partnership along with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, and Ukraine.

Australia supports Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting efforts of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) to resolve the Transnistrian Settlement Process.

Australia's Ambassador in Kyiv is accredited to Moldova. Moldova has no diplomatic representation in Australia.

Australia's trade and investment relationship with Moldova is modest. Economic and trade information can be found in the Moldova Country Fact Sheet.

Foreign policy

Moldova's foreign policy priorities include European integration, improving and maintaining good neighbourly relations and regional cooperation, and developing bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Moldova has actively participated in the EU's European Neighbourhood Policy. In July 2016, the Moldova-European Union Association Agreement entered into force. In April 2014, the EU lifted visa restrictions on Moldova, allowing its citizens to travel freely throughout the EU Schengen passport-free area.

Further details are available at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova.

Australia's foreign policy is guided by the Foreign Policy White Paper.
