Project description
The Alhambra in Spain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is an enduring example of how Islamic architecture intersected with local artistic traditions. The project aims to follow this tradition of mutual learning and fostering ongoing links between emerging Australian artists and masters of Islamic Art in Morocco. Morocco has an extraordinary history with art in the country ranging from Islamic and Berber to elements of Roman design and contemporary art. A group of Australian artists will accompany Hamida Novakovich, from the Centre for Muslim States and Societies (CMSS), to receive training with artisans in Morocco in traditional arts and skills such as leather embossing and sacred geometry. Upon return, these artists will share their knowledge with the wider community and train others interested in the intersection of Islamic and Australian art traditions.
