Australia and Uganda, on behalf of other African states, have jointly put forward an important
initiative addressing Global Food Security at the 121st General Assembly of the Inter-
Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva this week.
This joint resolution sets out a role for Parliamentarians across the world to work together
with world leaders, Governments, UN organisations and non-governmental organisations to
address the challenges of food security.
The Australian delegation worked closely with Uganda and other African Group
Parliamentarians to secure support for this initiative.
Over 1 billion people in the world do not have enough food to eat. Two-thirds of these are in
the Asia-Pacific region, while Africa has the highest proportion of people suffering from
chronic hunger in the world. Every six seconds a child dies because of starvation and related
diseases.
The resolution was adopted unanimously by world Parliamentarians.
The Australian delegation to the IPU was led by the Hon Roger Price, MP and included
Senator the Hon Judith Troeth, Senator Trish Crossin and Mrs Sophie Mirabella, MP.
