Commemorations will be held across Australia and in Bali tomorrow to mark the second anniversary of the Bali terrorist attack. Eighty-eight Australians were among the 202 people killed in the brutal bombings outside the Sari Club and Paddy's Bar in Kuta on 12 October 2002.
In Canberra, the Governor-General and the Prime Minister will attend a memorial church service at 10.30am in the St John the Baptist Church, Reid. In Sydney, a simple ceremony will be held at the Bali Memorial on Dolphins Point, Coogee, at 12.30pm tomorrow.
On the Gold Coast, a Candlelight Bali Remembrance Service will be held in the Allambe Memorial Park at Broadbeach, Nerang, from 5pm to 7pm. The South Australian Government is organising a multi-faith service at 6-6.30pm at St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Wakefield St, Adelaide. In Melbourne, a service will be held at 7pm at Lincoln Square, Swanston St, Carlton. And in Perth, the Premier will lay a wreath at the Bali Memorial at Kings Park.
A ceremony will also be held in Bali at 10.30am tomorrow at the memorial to the victims at Jalan Legian, adjacent to the Sari Club and Paddy's Bar sites. The 30-minute service will include the laying of wreaths at the memorial and speeches by the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, David Ritchie, and a senior Indonesian representative.
A Bali memorial service travel bulletin is available on the Department's www.smartraveller.gov.au website with further information on the Bali ceremony, including a link to the Department's travel advice for Indonesia. Australian Consulate-General officials in Bali are liaising closely with Indonesian authorities on enhanced security arrangements for the anniversary.
