Interactive Dialogue with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Sri Lanka

4 March 2022

Australian Statement

Thank you, High Commissioner, for your comprehensive update.

Australia is a longstanding partner in Sri Lanka’s reconciliation efforts. We are committed to supporting Sri Lanka through constructive and practical engagement to implement transitional justice commitments and international human rights obligations. We encourage Sri Lanka’s continued engagement with the Human Rights Council and its Special Procedures, and welcome the invitation for the High Commissioner to visit.

We recognise the High Commissioner’s concerns regarding the human rights situation in Sri Lanka, including: surveillance and intimidation of civil society, differential treatment of minority communities, respect for the rule of law including in relation to recent high-profile cases; and continuing reports of torture and ill-treatment by law enforcement officials.

We note Sri Lanka’s commitment to continue measures of peacebuilding, reparation, and development, and encourage the ongoing and independent operation of domestic reconciliation mechanisms.

We recognise recent releases on bail under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and encourage Sri Lanka to continue efforts to ensure its legal framework is in line with international human rights standards.

We encourage Sri Lanka to continue to work with your office, including to take forward recommendations of Council Resolution 46/1 on promoting reconciliation, accountability, and human rights.

Thank you.
