Women in Work (WiW) is Australia’s flagship gender investment in Sri Lanka. It has been implemented by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) since 2017 and is due to end in June 2023. This review was commissioned by Colombo Post to assess the program’s appropriateness, efficiency and effectiveness before DFAT embarks on a design process for a successor program.
Over the life of WiW, the operating context in Sri Lanka has shifted significantly. COVID-19, the country’s worst economic crisis and a subsequent political uprising present new development challenges and gendered impacts. This independent evaluation was drafted and delivered during the height of unrest in 2022. Given uncertainty remains around the country’s economic situation, Colombo Post will continue analytical work with DFAT’s Gender Equality branch in Canberra to inform the best approach for Australia’s next gender equality program in Sri Lanka.
