56th Session of the Human Rights Council

Interactive Dialogue on the Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the Situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar

18 June 2024

CANZ Statement

Thank you President

Australia is pleased to deliver this statement on behalf of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. We thank the High Commissioner for his report.

We share the grave concerns expressed in recent statements from the High Commissioner, IIMM and Special Rapporteur that detail targeted attacks against civilians, including Rohingya, which has led people to flee to the Bangladesh border and hampered humanitarian access. We are also concerned by reports of displacement in Buthidaung and call on all armed actors to ensure the protection of civilians.

The military regime’s implementation of the 2010 conscription law is increasing displacement of people, and contributing to further instability and violence. We are gravely concerned by reports of forcible recruitment of children by the regime.

We call on all States to prevent or halt the flow of arms, military and dual-use materials to the Myanmar military.

We remain resolute in our support for the people of Myanmar.

High Commissioner, can you please provide more information on the unique needs of women and girls who are internally displaced and what can be done to strengthen their protection?
