56th Session of the Human Rights Council

Interactive Dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel

19 June 2024

Australian Statement

Thank you President

Australia retains concerns about the nature of this Commission of Inquiry and its mandate.

However, Australia is gravely concerned by the findings of the Commission in its most recent report.

Australia has consistently reiterated that all parties to the conflict must comply with international humanitarian law.

We express serious concern at all allegations of conflict related sexual violence.

We repeat our condemnation of Hamas and its abhorrent October 7 attacks.

Hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally.

The death and destruction in Gaza is horrific and the human suffering of innocent civilians is unacceptable.

We oppose the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, the physical re-occupation of Gaza, any reduction in territory and any use of siege or blockade.

Australia has been clear that the standards democratic nations seek and accept are higher.

All civilians, and their human rights, must be protected.

Australia will continue to work with countries that support peace to press for agreement to President Biden’s ceasefire proposal and welcomes UNSC support for it.

The ongoing crisis underscores the need for a negotiated political solution to bring about peace and put an end to the violence.
