Meet our 2016 grantees
Project summary
Sector: Reciprocal Australian and Korean Studies
Country location: Australia, Republic of Korea
Grantee: University of South Australia (UniSA)
Project Description
A particular strength of South Korean (SK) teachers is their ability to present complex mathematical concepts in ways their students can relate to. This skill is based on their ability to blend Korean culture with effective learning strategies in fostering students' deep engagement with mathematical content. Our aim in the present project is to better understand the relationship between SK teachers' culture, knowledge of mathematical content and their ability to translate that knowledge into usable forms by students during the course of their teaching. Information about these relationships are critical to the design and delivery of learning experiences for prospective and current teachers of mathematics both in South Korean and Australian classrooms. In so doing, the project will provide a culturally rich and professionally rewarding context for the mathematics teaching communities and stakeholders from both countries to share and enhance mutual understandings.
