International legal firm King & Wood Mallesons has joined the New Colombo Plan Internship and Mentorship Network to provide internships to NCP scholars in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.
The internship program is an exciting opportunity for students to gain an insight into the workings of a large global law firm and to learn more about commercial law with an Asia focus.
Martyn Huckerby, an International Partner in the Shanghai office of King & Wood Mallesons, said, "Our investment in this program represents our strong commitment to develop law students professionally. Interns get exposure to the business and legal environment in Asia, an opportunity to meet clients, and legal experience under the supervision of an Australian qualified lawyer."
Seven NCP scholars have participated in the internship program so far, including Monash University's Ellie Wyatt (pictured) and the University of Queensland's Marissa Chesher. "As my first opportunity to intern at a top-tier international law firm, this experience has immeasurably contributed to my professional growth. The unique opportunity to work with legal experts in a mixed-culture corporate office in Shanghai has taught me valuable skills and opened my eyes to the opportunities available internationally", Marissa said.
Griffith University's Matthew Sharp completed an internship with King & Wood Mallesons in Hong Kong: "I learnt a great deal about the structure, strategy, and business culture at King & Wood Mallesons. My internship has made me realise just how much I would like to become a lawyer. I found it to be incredibly exciting and rewarding."
Student demand for legal internships in Asia is high. The opportunities offered by King & Wood Mallesons as well as other international law firms enable students to pursue their ambitions with greater clarity as they prepare for legal careers.
Other potential internship providers in the Indo-Pacific region are invited to visit ncpbusiness.dfat.gov.au to register interest in offering opportunities to NCP scholars studying in the region.
