In 2015-16 Australia's total official development assistance budget to Papua New Guinea (PNG) was $549.7 million.
Approximately 84 per cent of the aid program was delivered through DFAT with other federal government agencies contributing their expertise. Whilst Australia's aid program to PNG is large, the relative value of our aid investments has been declining – from about 40 per cent of PNG's budget appropriations in 1975 to about eight per cent now. Australia's development assistance is increasingly focussed on leveraging PNG's own resources and those of the private sector to support growth and deliver services to Papua New Guineans in five sectors including education, health, law and justice and governance. This report provides an assessment of the department's success in delivering assistance against objectives in these five sectors and in four cross-cutting areas.
