About SATPI
Australia and India are Comprehensive Strategic Partners and close friends. We share a vision for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
The Australia-India Strategic and Technology Policy Initiative is the latest in a suite of measures which seek to advance the Australia-India relationship in the areas critical to our shared future. SATPI will deepen our shared understanding of, and engagement with, the strategic and technology policy issues facing our region through research and collaboration, particularly in the Indo-Pacific.
Under SATPI, funding is available through an open and competitive multi-year grant program administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Priority areas
This inaugural grant round will prioritise funding for the SATPI flagship activity – the convening of an annual 1.5 track strategic dialogue between Australia and India. This dialogue was announced as a joint initiative during the second Australia-India 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi in November, 2023.
SATPI will also offer grant funding for other projects and activities which support SATPI's objectives. This may include other policy dialogues, conferences, workshops, research projects, policy papers, institutional exchanges, short-term residencies and fellowships and other innovative projects.
Available funding
A total of $1.25 million is available under SATPI per financial year from FY2024-25 to FY2026-27 (for a total of $3.75 million). Funding will be spread across multiple grants.
SATPI comprises three distinct grant opportunity streams:
- Grant Stream 1: SATPI flagship grant – grant of up to $500,000 per financial year for the grant period for the establishment and delivery of the 1.5 Track Strategic Dialogue;
- Grant Stream 2: SATPI major grants – multiple larger grants of between $250,000 to $500,000 per financial year for the grant period; and
