Bilateral relations

Australia and Paraguay established diplomatic relations in 1974. Australia's Ambassador in Buenos Aires holds non-resident accreditation to Paraguay. Australia has an Honorary Consulate in Asunción, established in January 2011.

Paraguay opened its embassy in Canberra in September 2011.

Australia and Paraguay are members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) - including through the Cairns Group of agricultural fair-trading countries, the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) and the UN.

Paraguay is a member of Mercosur, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Organization of American States (OAS).

The Australian Embassy in Argentina manages a Direct Aid Program in Paraguay.
