Increasing our engagement with Wallis and Futuna

Australia is present in Wallis and Futuna, the most remote and least developed of the French Pacific territories.

In April 2019, the former Australian Consul General in Noumea and team travelled to Wallis and Futuna, where they visited several Direct Aid Program (DAP) projects, including this shelter designed to encourage visitors and inhabitants to discover Futuna by foot. Photo: DFAT

Most recently, we have funded projects on education, gender-based violence, culture and heritage, water and sanitation, emergency response training, and accessibility for people with disabilities.

Australia also provides scholarships for higher education through our Australia Awards program. This has enabled students from Wallis and Futuna to study topics of direct relevance to their region, contributing to the development of their islands.

The Australian Consulate-General in New Caledonia is accredited to Wallis and Futuna.

Australia welcomed Wallis and Futuna becoming an Associate Member of the Pacific Islands Forum in 2018.
