Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, 18 March 2022

Australia commends the Special Rapporteur's report and conference paper for their clarity and detail on the continued supply of arms to Myanmar's military by states since the coup on 1 February 2021.

This trade has enabled the military regime to inflict horrific violence on Myanmar's people, intensifying the humanitarian, security, health, and economic crises across the country.  This is profoundly troubling and demands action.  The supply of arms to Myanmar must stop.

Australia calls on the international community to prevent the flow of arms to Myanmar.  We implore those countries still supplying arms to Myanmar to cease all operational support to the military and its representatives, and to end the provision of arms, enabling material, dual-use equipment, and technical assistance to the military and its representatives.

We call on those countries that ceased supplying arms to Myanmar after the coup to declare a unilateral arms embargo. We encourage all states to prevent the transfer of arms to Myanmar through their territory.

Australia supports calls for a global arms embargo on Myanmar. We ask the Special Rapporteur how best to hold those who continue to supply arms to the Myanmar military accountable?
