MEDIA RELEASE

Australia will send an expert mission to help the Philippines Government assess the damage caused by the landslide which has engulfed a village in the country's south.

This team will assess the impact of the landslide and the risk of further slides while also supporting survivors. The five-member AusAID-led team consists of engineers with expertise in geotechnical and structural engineering and water and sanitation.

The week-long mission will begin preliminary assessments of site stability, the extent of structural damage and provide advice to both the Philippines and Australian Governments. This will include proposing options for the reconstruction of affected services and infrastructure.

The President of the Philippines National Red Cross Senator Dick Gordon and Secretary for Defence Cruz have welcomed the proposed mission, and have expressed their appreciation for Australia's timely and proactive response.

The Engineering Advisory Mission is in addition to the $1 million Australia has already provided for immediate rescue and relief efforts to the Philippines National Red Cross and other key relief agencies. These funds will assist with evacuating survivors, setting up shelters and trauma counseling, as well as meeting the basic needs of food, clothing and medical equipment.

There are reports of more than 50 dead and a further 1,500 missing under four metres of mud covering about three square kilometres.

Flood warnings have been issued for the area as heavy rains are predicted for the next 24 hours, complicating rescue efforts.

Australians concerned about family and friends in the region can contact the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) Consular Emergency Centre on 1300 555135.
