The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade released today
the publication Exports of Primary and Manufactured
Products, Australia 2007-08
.

The publication analyses trade data on Australian-produced
merchandise exports by level of processing.

Key points in the document are:

  • The
    value of Australian-produced merchandise exports rose by 8.6
    per cent in 2007-08 to $234.3 billion;
  • Australian-produced merchandise exports accounted for 96.3 per
    cent of Australia's total merchandise exports in
    2007-08;
  • Exports of Primary products, Elaborately transformed
    manufactures and Services were all higher during the period,
    but exports of Simply transformed manufactures fell slightly;
    and
  • The
    rise in Australia's exports was more than offset by an
    11.5 per cent rise in imports during the financial year which
    was underpinned by robust domestic consumption and
    investment

– as a result, the trade deficit increased
by $7.9 billion to $20.6 billion.
