The Gambia
The Gambia, which occupies a narrow strip of land on either side of the Gambia River, is the smallest country on the African mainland. The official language is English and it is among the continent's most densely populated countries. The country's capital, Banjul, is located on St Mary's Island, near the mouth of the Gambia River.
The Gambia's economy is dominated by agriculture, fisheries and tourism.
The Gambia is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States.
Australia's High Commissioner to The Gambia is resident in Abuja, Nigeria. The Gambia's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, resident in Riyadh, is accredited to Australia.
