Bilateral relations

Australia and Guatemala established diplomatic relations in 1974. The Australian Embassy in Mexico City holds non-resident accreditation to Guatemala.

Guatemala opened its embassy in Canberra in 2014.

Australia and Guatemala enjoy a warm and expanding relationship, underpinned by cooperation in multilateral forums.

Australia and Guatemala cooperate multilaterally in a range of forums, including the United Nations and its organisations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) – including through the Cairns Group of agricultural fair-trading countries, and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC). Guatemala is a member of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

The Australian Embassy in Mexico manages a Direct Aid Program in Guatemala.
