2015 marks the 60th anniversary of Australia's diplomatic presence in Malaysia.

The beginning of diplomatic relations predates Malaysia's independence, with the establishment in 1955 of an Australian Commission in Kuala Lumpur in then Malaya. Two years later, Australia was among the first countries to establish formal diplomatic relations with the Federation of Malaya after independence.

The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur officially launched the anniversary year at its Australia Day celebration attended by around 1000 guests. In his welcome speech, High Commissioner

Mr Rod Smith PSM, reflected on the breadth and depth of the bilateral relationship, and the warmth on ongoing relations.

In advance of the anniversary year, the Australian High Commission held a logo design competition to promote the special year. The winner, a Malaysian with strong Australian connections, was awarded return flights to Australia sponsored by Malaysia Airlines.

The official logo draws on the design of the winning logo. The design incorporates the figure 60, drawn as an infinity symbol to represent the enduring friendship between Australia and Malaysia. It incorporates Malaysia's Federal Star and crescent, taken from Malaysia's national flag, and the Commonwealth (Federation) Star and Southern Cross.

The Australian High Commission will commemorate the 60th anniversary in a number of special activities throughout 2015. For updates on events celebrating the anniversary, visit the Australian High Commission's Facebook page and website.
