Project Description

Professor Jenny Graves AO FAA, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and winner of the 2017 Prime Minister's Prize for Science will deliver a series of lectures in the first half of 2019 focusing on her uniquely Australian research. This project will support Professor Graves in delivering her lectures and to engage with scientists, research institutions and universities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay. The lectures will focus on Professor Graves' research in genomics of Australian marsupials, how her research has contributed to a deeper understanding of the immune system, prion diseases and blood proteins, and how it helped understand the tumour driving the Tasmanian devil to extinction. Professor Graves will highlight Australia as a place to conduct high-quality research, while also raising awareness of the Science in Australia Gender Equity initiative, a partnership funded by the Australian government between the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, that aims to target inequity in STEMM education. Prof Graves will also raise awareness of the three science education programs developed by the Academy with funding from the Australian Government that support effective teaching and learning of science in primary and early secondary schools.
