Project description

The project is the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, to be held in Seoul from September to November 2017. Our contribution is a Masters of Architecture Studio hosted at the University of Technology, Sydney, led by Professors Andrew Benjamin and Gerard Reinmuth. The studio is anchored in the assertion that buildings are constituted by and form part of a network of relations and that this way of thinking about buildings expands the way architects might engage with and influence the city.

As part of the biennale, the students explored the potential of a key site to the north of Seoul and Seoul Station. The site has been the subject of numerous proposals in recent times, generally large development proposals for functions such as an international convention centre. In the studio, we took this as the functional brief, while the performance brief should take into account the reorganization of the broader city and its "commons" through this project. These issues were considered against a politically charged backdrop – the idea of an "immanent reunification" that would position Seoul Station as "Station No 1" on the trans-Siberian route to London.
