Project Description

Satan Jawa is a ground-breaking silent film and live music score commissioned by Arts Centre Melbourne for combined forces of traditional Indonesian and contemporary Western orchestral instruments.

Through in-depth cultural exchange, Satan Jawa will be co-composed by Iain Grandage (Australia) and Rahayu Supanggah (Indonesia) to a new film by Garin Nugroho (Indonesia). The project facilitates two-way visits and skills exchange during a series of creative workshops, cultural research, collaborative rehearsals, recording sessions and public performances – bringing together musicians from Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and instrumentalists from Indonesia to create a work of international significance.

Satan Jawa will be previewed at Teatre Jakarta, followed by a premiere in Arts Centre Melbourne's prestigious Hamer Hall, where musicians perform side-by-side. It will be the largest collaborative project within the inaugural Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts (Asia TOPA), a season of contemporary Asian arts presented by a consortium of Melbourne's leading cultural institutions.
