Project Description

Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey are leading Australian sound/music experimental artists, working across industries, sites and contexts. They have worked together since 1993 and live in Melbourne, Australia. Their experimental work is driven by a curiosity and questioning about listening in human culture.

Their production, Five Short Blasts, Hamburg, is an encounter with the waters and city of Hamburg and comprises a flotilla of boats and radio broadcasts, created with the people and contingencies of the harbour. The term, Five Short Blasts is a marine signal for "I am unsure of your intentions and fear we may collide."

Five Short Blasts connects with the water community, working with a local writer and five boat skippers, presenting a season of early morning voyages around the Port and Waterways of central Hamburg, Germany. The presentation of this award-winning work creates an exchange brokered through the universal language of water passage.
