Description

The QAGOMA exhibition No1 Neighbour: Art in Papua New Guinea 1966–2016 will present the work of artists from Papua New Guinea (PNG), held in the QAGOMA collection, to Australian and international audiences. The PNG representation in the QAGOMA collection focusses on the vibrancy of contemporary artistic expression, a direction that is unique in Australia. Profiling this collection, the exhibition demonstrates the gallery's long term engagement with PNG.

A major project proposed to take place during No1 Neighbour is the multi-art installation and performance event Bit na ta. Created in partnership with Melbourne based Wantok Musik Foundation (WMF), this project will explore a shared history in East New Britain between 1914 and the 1950s through a contemporary musical response to the oral histories of the local Tolai people. The Gallery will engage Australian composer, musician and filmmaker David Bridie of WMF, who has extensive experience in working with the Tolai community and its musicians to facilitate a series of workshops culminating in the production of original songs, video clips, and an audio visual installation created in PNG. These events will be documented and later presented as installations at both QAG in No1 Neighbour and at the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery.
