The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade recommends that Australian travellers should consider deferring all non-essential travel to Serbia and Montenegro. Tension on the border with Eastern Slavonia (in Croatia) reinforces this recommendation.

The Department also notes that because of United Nations sponsored sanctions and the prohibition of international financial transactions with Serbia and Montenegro, travel to/from and within the country is complicated and potentially difficult. Greater difficulties and risks arise in rural areas - especially those adjacent to any fighting. It should also be noted that there have been reports that dual nationals in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) who have connections with areas of Bosnia and Croatia under Serb control, have been subject to forced military service.

Australians who nevertheless visit Serbia and Montenegro are strongly urged to register their presence with the Australian Embassy at 13 Cika Ljubina 11000, Belgrade, tel: (381-11) 624655. Australians who are intending to depart Serbia and Montenegro are requested to inform the Embassy of their plans.
