Senator the Hon Kay Patterson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for
Foreign Affairs, today announced that the Australian Government's Overseas Aid
Agency (AusAID) will support a three year project to improve the contribution
South African local governments are making to their nation's economic and social
development.
The $7 million, three year Australia-South Africa Local Governance
Partnership project will promote partnerships between Australian and South
African local government. It will specifically focus on developing the ability
of provincial and local governments in KwaZulu Natal and Free State to provide
essential services and infrastructure.
'Although South Africa has a sophisticated local government system, it is
facing challenges at the moment which Australian local governments can assist
with,' Senator Patterson said.
The partnership will strengthen intergovernmental relations and local
government associations, as well as improve financial management and service
delivery to the poor in rural areas.
'Australians working in local government have the skills and experience to
help their South African counterparts in a range of areas. But this is not just
a one-way street. As is often the case with Australia-s aid program, the
exchange of ideas and information will have real benefits for Australia too,'
the Senator said.
In 2001-02, the Australian Government will contribute an estimated $10.1
million in aid to support social and economic reforms in South Africa.
