Fiji Rural Economic Development Program: Design Document—UNWOMEN

Summary of publication

This document details the project design for the first stage of a UNWOMEN activity to pilot market place improvements in five selected sites in Fiji.

The first stage of the project will negotiate a new approach to market management between municipal authorities and women market vendors. It will devise a toolkit to guide future market infrastructure improvements so that the needs and interests of women and men are equally represented. It will use the toolkit to scope works to improve markets at five pilot sites: Suva City Market, Sigatoka Market, Nausori Market, Labasa Market and Rakiraki Market. Through their involvement in planning workshops, women will gain knowledge and confidence to represent their interests to the mostly male market managers and government administrators.
