High Commissioner’s oral update on the human rights situation in Ukraine

Australian Statement

Australia thanks the High Commissioner for her oral update.

Australia remains a steadfast supporter of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Australia is deeply concerned that Russia’s illegal annexation has seen a deterioration in human rights in Crimea, particularly amongst ethnic and religious communities. Echoing the declaration of the Crimea Platform, we urge Russia ‘to comply with its obligations as an occupying power under international humanitarian law and other applicable international law’.

We also stand with our UNESCO partners in condemning broader violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Crimea, in particular, the repression of free media, forced conscription of Ukrainian citizens into the Russian military, and misuse of the judicial system.

We acknowledge Ukraine’s efforts to uphold LGBTQI rights, including the recent facilitation of safe and secure Pride Equality marches in Kyiv and Kharkiv, while noting with concern the continued prevalence of discrimination and attacks.

Australia would welcome an update from the High Commissioner on her efforts to gain access to Ukraine, in particular occupied Crimea, to facilitate her reporting.
