Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is a key objective of Australia’s development program, including through an 80 per cent performance target to ensure Australia’s development investments effectively address gender equality, and a requirement that investments over $3 million have a gender equality objective.
Following the success of the 10-year Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development (Pacific Women) initiative (2012-2022), PNG Women Lead is the new bilateral investment (2023 to 2028, AUD 55 million) supporting gender equality in PNG. It builds on the success of the Pacific Women, and is complementary to the new regional initiative Pacific Women Lead. The goal of this investment is that PNG women and girls, in all their diversity, are safe and equitably share in resources, opportunities and decision-making, with men and boys.
