The statement by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China on 15 May regarding Australian parliamentarians visiting Taiwan for the inauguration of Dr Lai Ching-te contains some incorrect assertions.

Australia adheres consistently to our longstanding and bipartisan One China policy.

Travel by parliamentarians to Taiwan is a regular feature of engagement with Taiwan. These visits are consistent with Australia’s One China policy and with past practice. Parliamentarians traveling to Taiwan do so in their individual capacities.

Australia’s Representative in Taipei will also attend the inauguration, consistent with past practice.
