Information for foreign representatives accredited to Australia
Before his appointment as Chief of Protocol, Jonathan Muir was Australia’s Ambassador to Qatar, where he served concurrently as Special Representative on Afghanistan. Prior to this, he was Acting Assistant Secretary, People Smuggling and Human Trafficking Taskforce. He served earlier as a Senior Media Adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mr Muir was posted to Indonesia from 2009 to 2013.
He holds a Master of International Affairs with Distinction from the Australian National University and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from the Queensland University of Technology. He was awarded the Australian Operational Service Medal (Civilian) for his contribution to the Afghanistan Non-combatant Evacuation Operation in 2022. He was granted the Al Wajbah Decoration for services to the Australia-Qatar relationship in 2023.
