General Statement (after adoption): Resolution on the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, delivered by Canada on behalf of Australia and New Zealand, 13 November 2024

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of Australia, New Zealand and my own country, Canada.
We are proud to support the important work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the resolution before us today. We are deeply concerned by the ongoing global forced displacement crisis, which now affects over 120 million people worldwide. This crisis is unprecedented in scale and impact, and its consequences are felt not only by those who are forced to flee their homes, but also by the communities that generously host them.

In the face of such a staggering challenge, the role of the UNHCR is more critical than ever. The agency’s efforts to provide life-saving protection, assistance, and solutions to displaced populations are vital, and we are fully committed to supporting the UNHCR in fulfilling its mandate.

We commend the High Commissioner and the dedicated staff of the agency for their tireless work under increasingly difficult conditions.

CANZ also stresses the importance of safeguarding the space for neutral, impartial, and independent humanitarian action. Humanitarian assistance must remain free from politicization, ensuring that aid reaches those in need, wherever they are, without discrimination or delay.

We urge all Member States to respect and support the fundamental principles of humanitarian action, including the need for unhindered access to those who are most vulnerable.

Thank you.
