Meet our 2016 grantees
Project summary
Sector: Reciprocal Australian and Korean Studies
Country location: Australia, Republic of Korea
Grantee: The University of Newcastle
Project Description
A common assumption in many international creative partnerships is that design is a universal language through which different cultures can readily communicate and solve problems. This view can be found in Australian and Korean joint ventures in the design industry, and in the relationships between Korean students and academics working with their Australian counterparts in architecture and design. But a growing body of research suggests that design is not a universal language and that the process of designing is actually shaped by cultural and linguistic practices.
Led by an Australian and Korean academic partnership, this project sets out to improve our joint understanding of language in design, and through this provide a new insight into the way different cultures communicate their values, attitudes and intent. Through this work, the project will support creative, educational, cultural and strategic links between Australia and South Korea.
