Project Description
Ensuring safety for women and children in cities and urban spaces is a priority for Australia and Korea and a key target of global initiatives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At a city scale, it is extremely challenging to assess the safety of public spaces as they include complex, interrelated issues. Smart technologies, including smartphone apps, machine learning and data analytics, can play a critical role in addressing this issue. This project proposes a collaboration between Korea's largest public corporation 'Land and Housing' - which has developed new safety measures for next-generation smart cities, with UNSW's Smart Cities Research Cluster – a leader in city analytics research. The project involves the UN award-winning Indian social enterprise 'Safetipin' which specialises in the design and application of safety apps for women, children and vulnerable demographics. This collaborative venture seeks to harness and develop the power of innovative smart technologies and applications in measuring and visualizing urban safety and informing urban design, planning and policy-making in this area.
The project is jointly led by Dr Scott Hawken, Dr Simone Zarpelon Leao, Assoc Prof Hoon Han and Mr Sarbeswar Praharaj at the Smart Cities Research Cluster UNSW.
